Newport Before The Finns

Newport Early History: Before Finnish Arrival

Newport was not always home to a Finnish community. This page and the few pages that follow discuss the history of Newport before the Finns arrived. It is important to outline and explore the history of Newport previous to the arrival of the Finns to explain the town that they were migrating and immigrating to. The pages following this one will briefly mention the Sunapee Tribe that used to inhabit the area, the first colonial charter and will then will turn to the 19th century and the arrival of new roads, taverns, bridges, and the arrival of the mills. This will be the only part of the project that does not explicitly discuss the Finns.
