Construction of the Blue Ridge Parkway

PREVIOUS: Home

Construction of the BRP was a long and complicated process. Building a road is about much more than just laying down the asphalt. Through this section we will explore two aspects of the construction that intersect with migration. The Civilian Conservation Corp brought men from around North Carolina and the surrounding states to work on national parks, including the Parkway. Naturalists were also very influential when it came to building the BRP. They came from far and wide to enjoy the natural beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains and made sure that the BRP was built with trails and those mountains in mind. Below you will see a map of the BRP in North Carolina with the sections connected as they were constructed. The BRP was built over the course of 50 years and they did not finish the sections in the exact order they connect making the road all the more interesting.
